America’s Cup Regatta Director Iain Murray shared his safety recommendations on May 22 at a meeting with the four competing teams and the America’s Cup Event Authority.
In what can only been seen as a poke in the eye of the folks in charge of the America’s Cup, Luna Rossa went out for a sail just two days after the review panel asked all teams to refrain from sailing for about a week while it convened to look into the death of Artemis crewmember Andrew Simpson. At a briefing on May 14, America’s Cup organizers announced the summer event will remain on track after the tragic events of May 9. Since then, the Review Committee has recommended all teams suspend AC72 and AC45 sailing.
Andrew Simpson died tragically after Artemis Racing capsized its AC72 during training on Thursday, May 9. The two-time British Olympian was trapped underneath the boat.
