The ultimate test in team sport, the Volvo Ocean Race, starts on Sunday, when seven of the best sailing teams in the world cross the starting line off Alicante, Spain.
In the kick off in-port race in Alicante, Mapfre once again showed their dominance, racking up another win.
In a slow, but thrilling light air finish to the Volvo Ocean Race Prologue, Mapfre edged out Team Brunel to take yet another win.
The first 24-hours of the Prologue leg from Lisbon to Alicante brought tricky, light conditions to the fleet in the Mediterranean.
“These young sailors have the passion and drive to prove a point that they should be there and not the salty old guys that have been around four or five times.”
“The boats are basically even, so making the right decision at the right time will be critical, to seize the moment to tack or jibe.”
“You know what you’re starting with and taking it on, you’ve chosen to be here, so you’re going to have to give it 100 percent.”
“Charles is one of the most determined guys I’ve ever met. His mindset is to go fast, and that’s what we are here to do with him.”
“Winning campaigns get straight As in all areas, from preparation, to creating the right environment and getting the right people with the right attitude.”
“We’ll treat every leg differently and not get caught up in the overall picture of where we are. We’re Aussies, we’re simple people, and we like to keep it simple.”
“It’s no secret we are in this race to win it,” says Towill, “and this time we’ve deemed it that more people is better than less.”
