The Laser Class makes its way to the Columbia River Gorge for the 2012 North American Championships this week.
Hoping to convince any doubters that sailors are athletes, too, 2008 gold medalist Anna Tunnicliffe goes sailing in the buff for ESPN the Magazine‘s annual The Body issue.
31 lasers competed at Surf City Yacht Club at the June 2nd Jack Elfman Orange Coffee Pot Regatta this year. The full-rig winner was Clay Johnson, with only 6 points in 7 races after his drop, and the radial winner was Kelly McGlynn, also with just 6 points. Video credit goes to Jon Deutsch, who taped much of the regatta from the bow of his boat, and arranged some of the highlights in this compilation. With the breeze hanging between 10-17 knots, it was a glorious day of sailing.
The June 2nd event took place at Surf City Yacht Club in New Jersey, and served as the US Singlehanded Championships Area C Elimination regatta. 7 races took place. As I stood back and watched water gush from the stern-plug of my Laser, the disappointing reality hit me. My boat, the first and only one I’ve ever owned—and surprisingly watertight to this day—was no longer whole. “Editor’s Letter” from our May 2012 issue.

After helping with RC duties for the Potomac River Sailing Association Laser fleet, I have a newfound respect for those who run races.

The District 11 Laser Championship was fantastic; I was anything but.
