Alan Andrews, 2003 Boat of the Year Judge

Alan Andrews is a noted designer and president of Alan Andrews Yacht Design, Inc. in Long Beach, Calif., a firm he formed in 1979. He’s been designing winning raceboats stretching back to the 30-footer Details, 1982 MORC International champion. In 2002, Andrews-designed Transpac 52s won the Puerto Vallarta Race, MEXORC, Yachting Cup and Ensenada Race Class A. His ULDB 70’s, have been first to finish in Transpac, both Chicago and Bayview Mackinac races, and have set multiple race records. He serves on the US SAILING IMS Committee and is an associate member of the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers.

An active sailor, Andrews routinely competes in high-profile events as tactician, watch captain, helmsman, and trimmer. Prior to starting his own firm, he worked for Doug Peterson and then for boat builder Dencho Marine, Inc. where he contributed extensively to Arriba, overall winner of the 1979 Transpac. Andrews is a graduate of Stanford University where he received a degree in Mechanical Engineering and was selected as a College All-American in 1976.
