“Consistency,” is a term that’s used a lot in sailboat racing: and what it means is avoiding big mistakes, using conservative tactics, and aiming for top finishes. It’s often easier said than done, of course, especially when winds are extremely light and unpredictable, and the current very strong. It’s consistency, however, says overall winning skipper Chris Snow, of San Diego, that ultimately earned he and his teammates the win in their 16-boat J/24 division, and the Sperry Top-Sider Seattle NOOD Regatta’s overall title.
Snow, a professional sailmaker with North Sails San Diego, and a perennial J/24 class champion, led his team of west coast sailors to an early lead in the series on Friday, winning four of five races in the regatta’s windier conditions. When the winds turned light on Saturday and Sunday, however, local skipper Harry Dursch and his teammates on Self Abuse started to chip away at Baba Louie’s overall lead.
“Harry and his guys are from here and they’re really fast in this light air, flat stuff,” said Snow. “So today they really made us work for our money.” Self Abuse won the day’s first race, with Baba Louie mere feet behind at the finish. In the second and final race of the regatta, a drifter of a race, Self Abuse beat Baba Louie again, reducing their lead to 2 points. When the wind disappeared altogether on Puget Sound, the race committee abandoned racing for the day, a decision that Snow and crew fully endorsed. Snow’s crew for the weekend included Pat Dore (tactician), Melanie Edwards (bow), Ken Monaghan (mast), and Dale Turley (trimmer).
Racing across all three divisions was abandoned by mid-day, but only after several fleets completed two races in a 5-knot southerly. On the northernmost circle, which featured the larger boats of the regattas, only race was sailed.
