Sailing World Larchmont NOOD Day 1 September is without a doubt the finest month of the year in the Northeast. The water is as warm as it gets all year, stripped bass are passing through and the bluefish are mowing through schools of bait fish. Cold fronts sweep through with regularity, leaving crisp blue skies and fresh northerlies behind. Simply put, there’s no better place to be than on the water. Today, on Long Island Sound, as the Sailing World Larchmont NOOD Regatta in New York, got underway for some classes, a privileged handful of racers enjoyed sheer September perfection. With 10 knots of breeze and flat water Farr 395s, and J/27 teams knocked off three races to get the sixth edition of this event rolling. In the 395s, Mike Frachia’s Carpe Diem, from Pt. Jefferson, N.Y., won three straight races to take an early lead over Carl Blocksberg’s Extreme, from Hoboken, N.J., and in the three J/27 races, Doug Davies’ Amythst, from Stony Brook, N.Y., also went unbeaten to kick off the weekend right. Three Beneteau 36.7s scrimmaged two races as warm ups for their Northeast Championship?a two-day series that starts here tomorrow?and blitzing the racecourse for the first time as a team was Mark Ploch’s M&Ms. Ploch’s team from City Island, N.Y., went 1-1 in the day’s two practice races, sailing them as if they counted. Tomorrow, the 395s, J/27s, and Beneteau 36.7s will be joined by Express 37s, J/105s, J/30s, J/44s, Soverel 33s, and Swan 45s, spread across two racing circles. The forecast is for light northerlies.
