Shortly after leaving the docks of Bayview YC and other yacht clubs and marinas in the Detroit area Saturday morning, racers in the 2003 Sailing World Detroit NOOD regatta were sent back to the barn. Citing weather conditions that were ugly and forecast to get uglier, the Bayview YC race committee cancelled Day 2 of the Detroit NOOD at 9:15 Saturday morning. “East winds 15 to 25 knot becoming north to 30 knots. Mostly cloudy. Numerous showers through noon then a chance of showers. Waves 2 to 3 feet,” was the word from the National Weather Service, so the plug was pulled.
Peter Reggio, the regatta PRO, was with the race committee for Racing Area A north of Grosse Pointe and seeing winds of 17 to 25 knots when they received reports from the Race Committees on Racing Areas B and C-further east on Lake St. Clair, and more exposed to the strong Northeasterly breeze-that the seas on their courses were “very confused” and that they doubted their ability to anchor successfully. Those reports, combined with a forecast from Ken Campbell of Commanders Weather that showed the passage of the strong frontal system occurring earlier than expected, and probably in the middle of the days racing, convinced the event race committee that the safest thing to do was call the days racing off. With local forecasters calling for winds of up to 40 knots, participants in the event seemed pleased with the RCs decision.

Sunday is the final day of the Detroit NOOD regatta, and while the forecast looks a tad cool, even for early June, conditions should be just about perfect for racing, with Northwesterly winds ranging between 10 and 20 knots.
