The United States SailGP Team announced this week the launch of a nationwide, open application process for American female athletes as part of its ongoing roster selection process. Interested female athletes can CLICK HERE to complete and submit their application, which must be submitted by 11:59pm ET on Thursday, February 25.

U.S. SailGP Team helm Jimmy Spithill reiterated the team’s commitment to creating an inclusive environment as it builds out its Season 2 roster: “This open process is about reaching out to the entire country to identify individuals with the right skills, attitude and work ethic necessary to join the team. We will look to help further their skills this season and put in the time required to build a strong foundation for their future success.”

The jump to the application provides additional detail, stating: “More specifically, we’re looking for hungry, talented women who thrive on adrenaline, don’t care about going home with a salt stained face each day, and think they can tame our 50 knot warhorse that is fastest when it’s on the edge of control. We’re expanding the depth of professional sailing talent in the USA and we want YOU to be that future. Candidates must demonstrate a high-degree of skill in the sailing and foiling disciplines coupled with a work-ethic that matches the trajectory of our high-performance team.”

The application process, it continues, will include several stages: “Athletes selected to progress to subsequent rounds after review of their first round, written application will be notified individually. If you are not selected to progress, don’t worry. The United States SailGP Team will be announcing additional athlete development initiatives prior to our first event in Bermuda, April 24-25.

The first round of the application process is a written application. The second round is a “remote foiling skill level test.” For this stage they recommend using the WASZP foiling dinghy as “the preferred selection tool but applicants are encouraged to use the foiling craft of their choosing.” The third stage is an interview process and they expecd to make our final athlete selection before March 31, 2021.

In addition to the open application, the team will be announcing more programming next month for aspiring American athletes. SailGP Season 2 opens with the Bermuda Grand Prix presented by Hamilton Princess, April 24-25 when the U.S. team will go head-to-head with the sport’s best athletes, representing seven other rival nations.
