As much an aficionado of the old as he is of the new, Sailing World Editor at Large and ESPN Sailing Analyst Gary Jobson went back to original sources: newspapers, magazines, New York YC programs, and memoirs to write the text for An Americas Cup Treasury: The Lost Levick Photographs, 1893-1937 (The Mariners Museum, $45).
Levicks black and white photographs- “Miracle shots,” says Jobson–do an outstanding job of capturing the size and grandeur of the majestic boats that vied for the Cup during this period. The 150 photos in the book were chosen by Jobson from a rarely viewed collection of nearly 2,000 Levick prints owned by The Mariners Museum in Newport News, Va. Jobson contributes an essay on each of the Cup contests Levick photographed, focusing on the lesser known facts such as the questionable sportsmanship of the Earl of Dunraven, who challenged for the Cup in 1893 and 1895.
