Alinghi has narrowed the search for a host city for the 32nd America’s Cup down to eight cities. A press release from the Ernesto Bertarelli’s Swiss syndicate named Barcelona, Spain; Lisbon, Portugal; Marseilles, France; Naples, Italy; Palma de Mallorca; Sardinia/Porto Cervo, Italy; Tuscany/Elba, Italy; and Valencia, Spain, as the cities that have been asked to provide the syndicate with extensive information with an eye toward how each would host the regatta. According to the release, more than sixty sites expressed interest in hosting the regatta.
“We have identified eight sites,” said Michel Bonnefous, Alinghis Executive Director and the individual tasked with finding a venue for the 32nd Cup Match, “and sent them a request for additional technical information, especially concerning meteorology, facilities and infrastructure. This document will enable us to standardize the information at our disposal and provide input for our discussions concerning the appointment, in the month of May, of four candidate sites for hosting the 32nd Americas Cup.”
Alinghi has said that it will make the announcement of a the venue and dates for the regatta by Dec. 15, though the syndicate hopes to make the decision well before then.
