The 2022 College Sailing fall season is four weeks old and our first installment of the ICSA College Sailing Rankings presented by Sailing World provides a glimpse of what to watch for as the season ramps up. The beginning of the fall season sees three weekends of doublehanded intra-conference competition along with singlehanded and match race conference championships.
The final weekend of competition included in these rankings includes Women’s ACC Round 1 A&B and The Danmark Trophy, the first Open Cross Regional Event. At the Women’s ACC Round 1 we saw 35 of the top women’s teams from across the country compete in two semi-final events from which the top-nine teams from each move on to the ACC Finals hosted by USMMA. The Women’s ACC Finals is the toughest event of the fall season and the second most competitive event in women’s sailing. The Danmark Trophy allowed the nation’s top teams to see each other for the first time in 2022 and prepare for the upcoming Open ACC Round 1.
The road to Singlehanded Nationals is underway with all six conferences sailing their championships. In MCSA, University of Michigan’s William Vogel earned the ILCA 7 championship and Claire Considine from University of Wisconsin earned the ILCA 6 championship. Last year’s ICSA ILCA 7 National Champion, Leo Boucher, from St Mary’s College of Maryland, won the MAISA championship with an outstanding performance. On the ILCA 6 side from MAISA, Lucija Ruzevic from Cornell won the Faye Bennet Trophy. For NEISA, Leyton Borcherding, Brown University, ILCA 7 and Sophia Montgomery, Harvard University, ICLA 6 claimed the conference championships. Stanford University claimed both ICLA 6 and 7 conference championships with Hallie Schiffman and Chapman Petterson respectively. In SAISA, Richard McCann, University of Miami, won the tiebreaker to win the ICLA 7 championship with Emily Allen, Jacksonville University, winning the ILCA 6. In SAISA, Tulane University captured both ICLA 6 and ILCA 7 championships with Ashley Hoguet and Thad Lettsome. The ICSA Singlehanded Championship will be contested November 5-6 at Old Dominion University.
Several conferences have completed their Match Race Championship. Winning their respective championships are Georgetown University – MAISA, College of Charleston – SAISA, and Tulane University – SEISA. PCCSC and NEISA have their conference championships October 15 to 16. This year’s Match Race National Championship will be sailed in J/22s out of San Diego Yacht Club.
The ICSA College Rankings are created by a panel of six permanent rankers and two rotating supplemental rankers. The next rankings will be issued in late October.
